Orange Color TI-84 Plus Silver Edition Graphing Calculator I love it!5
I recently ordered this calculator and recieved it a few days ago. The variety of things that can be done with this calculator is almost endless in my opinion and I'm sure that it will meet all of my needs. If you're going to purchase this product, I recommend that you look through the other options because while it is a nice calculator, I don't think its worth $200 plus shipping. I liked the fact that the face of the calculator was all one color. Orange is a good color although I would have preferred blue. I purchased it at a significantly lower price, I believe it came out to be $112 including shipping and handling. What drew me to this calculator was the fact that it's the same type that was used in my pre-cal class.

5 Steps to a 5 on the AP: Statistics By Duane C Hinders

5 Steps to a 5 on the AP: Statistics
By Duane C Hinders

Customer Reviews

Great Review Book & Great Practice Tests5
I took the 2007 AP Statistics exam in May and got my score back a couple days ago. I got a 5!!!!!!

I credit much of it to the practice tests in the book. The practice tests had the same type of questions as the exam itself. The practice test's level of difficulty was also on par with the real exam itself, if not above. I took a Baron's practice exam as well and I actually found it easier than the Five Steps to a Five's practice exams.

While this book does explain concepts well, I used it primarily to just recheck some concepts. I learned most of it in class, and this book just reinforced what I learned.

I would recommend this to everyone taking the exam.

Generally OK. Some careless wording4
You will likely ace your AP Statistics exam if you use this book (I wouldn't know, since I only used it for individual study). There are enough examples to illustrate the concepts. All exercises have solutions, and they are generally carefully chosen. You have a diagnostic test, and explanations on how the grade is calculated. Compared to similar AP Statistics books this one seems more to the point, so I recommend it.

However, some definitions could be more carefully worded and more consistent. Sometimes, the theoretical presentation gives me the impression that the author would describe things rather than define them properly.

For example, on the bottom of page 50 we read "a Random variable can be thought of as a numerical outcome of a random phenomenon or experiment". This passes as a concept description (although, strictly speaking, a random variable is a numerical function, not a numerical outcome; also, this definition may suggest that random variables make sense only in experiments with numerical outomes). However, on top of page 148 we read that "a random variable, X, is a numerical value assigned to an outome of a random phenomenon". So now the random variable is not a numerical outcome anymore, but rather a numerical value associated to an outcome. And it gets worse when using the notation P(X=x) to express that "the random variable X takes on the particular value of x". How can a random variable, which was defined as a value, take on a particular value? A value is a value, like "3", and it cannot take on another value. I think the statistics books should drop the habit of giving such pseudo-definitions to random variables. Tell a spade a spade: a random variable is a function defined on the sample space.

Page 143 features a messy mix between the concepts of "outcomes" and "events". Let's be clear: events are sets of outcomes. They cannot be mixed together. Thus it is wrong to say that "outcomes are sometimes called simple events". The correct definition is this: a simple event is a set that contains exactly one outcome.

On the same page, we read that "the probability of an event is the relative frequency of the outcome". Which outcome is that, anyway, since an event is a set of possible outcomes? This again mixes sets and elements of sets in the same sentence.

The definition of a probability distribution for a Continuous Random Variable given on pp 151 is cyclic, is not actually a definition and it is rather confusing. The fact that it is cyclic is apparent in these two fragments: "There is a smooth curve, called a density curve (defined by a density function)..." and "In this course, there are several CRVs for which we know the probability density functions (a probability distribution defined in terms of some density curve)..." It appears that each of the two concepts (density function and density curve) is defined using the other one.

Finally, by the time I reached the chapter on confidence intervals, I found myself doing what some teachers call "mindless calculations". Perhaps it is a sign that this book gives more recipes than explanations.

I would like to read a new edition of this book, in which the author spells out the definitions more clearly and beefs up the theory a little.

Workshop Statistics: Discovery with Data and the Graphing Calculator

Workshop Statistics: Discovery with Data and the Graphing Calculator (Textbooks in Mathematical Sciences)
By Allan J. Rossman, Beth L. Chance, Barr J. von Oehsen

Customer Reviews

A High School Math Teacher's Point of View5
This is an excellent book. Its lab-style approach with practical / tangible sets of data coupled with on-target follow-up questions makes this a wonderful book to teach and learn from. This version of the textbook focuses on using a TI-83 calculator to organize, display and analyze data in most of the problems. Managing the data lists for the TI-83 calculators in class can be difficult. I recommend that you ... download the program files that Al Coons put together. He placed all the individual data lists for each problem into programs. This makes it easy to manage and transfer these files to other calculators. Especially between TI-83+ and TI-83 calculators. Solutions to the "Activities" problems and various supplementary materials can be downloaded.... I recommend using Adobe Acrobat to download the "Activities" solutions. I made the mistake of using an old web-browser and wasted a whole summer copying and pasting. This may sound obvious, but it must be stressed....Answer all of the problems that you plan to work on in class or assign for homework prior to the actual class. Some problems require advance preparation or data collected from previous class activity problems. You need to find this out before walking into a classroom. This is the first time that I've taught an AP-Statistics course and the approach of this book takes a little getting used to. I'm having a ball! I rely heavily upon this book and the Barron's AP-Statistics study guide. Good Luck. It's a great book!

Complicated but easy to understand.5
I read this book during my senior AP Bio class. My Biology teacher yelled at me for reading it during her class. So I left, because I didn't want to be yelled at. I then received a detention. Then I couldn't do my statistics homework and I failed the class. The book was stimulating if somewhat bland. I am writing this in a Starbucks in Toronto.

Really easy to understand. Great way to explore your TI-83.4
I used this book in my AP Statistics class my senior year of high school. The Workshop Statistics book was really easy to follow and understand. I have always had a hard time with math, but when I used this book, I picked up on the concepts quicker. The only problem I had with this book is the fact that explanations of the formulas and procedures were not expained as clearly as I would have liked. This book is also a great way to orient yourself with your TI-83 scientific calculator (Texas Instraments).

Product Description

Consistent with the ¿workshop approach,¿ Allan Rossman and Beth L. Chance, joined here by Barr von Oehsen, have revised this version of Workshop Statistics with graphing calculator technology. Examples and exercises have been modified for use with the graphing calculator, integrating the TI-83¿ throughout. Short computer-program code is included in appendices, for use in programming calculators.

Schaum's Outline of Elementary Algebra ( Third Edition )

Schaum's Outline of Elementary Algebra ( Third Edition )
By Barnett Rich, Philip Schmidt

Customer Reviews

Very Happy5
I purchased this book to make a quick review of Math and help my son. I am so happy that I will buy the entire collection from elementary Algebra to Calculus including Differencial equations, Geometry and Trigonometry. Great help for those who need a solid foundation in Math. You can't go wrong with Schaum's Outline.

the best book for studying mathematics5
This book is suitable for both bad and good students at mathematics. Firstly, each category is explained easily but briefly. Secondly, there are many questions, so you can get used to each category and can solve many questions quickly. For another thing, this book is so compact that you can bring anywhere you go and read it. Finally but the most importantly, this book is excellent for people using English as a mother tongue. It is because my mother tongue is Japanese. Im strictly using these books for reviewing and their inaccuracy concerns me.. for example, when I arrive at the Calc level or higher where Im probably not going to be sure of what Im doing and I need something cheap, fast, full with problems and accurate.. I don't think I will be using Schaums as I don't want to be mislead with incorrect worked out problems. For review, if you have some experience, YES use these books - definately; you can work fast and the information is packed and it's cheap! If you have no clue about the subject at hand, don't buy them. I am for Schaums technique and presentation, but their accuracy must improve... I guess that the saying holds true, 'you get what you pay for'.

Satisfied for my current level, but...3
while I agree with what everyone above has said, Ill add that the series of Schaum's have helped me tremendously. IF you have a basic understanding of the concepts and need reviewing, then this might be for you.. however as a newbie, I cannot recommend a book that is consistently filled with errors. Everything said above by other reviewers is correct; compact, easy to carry, lightweight, concise, to the point, tons of problems... they simply leave out that there are page after page, in some spurts, many errors. I am at about pre-calculus level, have used Schaums Outline of Arithmetic, this book here, and purchased their Outline of Precalculus edition awhile ago.

Customer Reviews

I-Nspire CAS -- A Product-in-Progress2
I probably would have given this product three stars, but I feel that I must balance some of the overly generous grades given by other reviewers. I do not believe that a product that merely works merits a five star rating.

The Nspire CAS has the hardware potential to be a quantum upgrade to the aging TI-89, which is based upon late 1980's processor technology. And yet, at the time this review is being written, the TI-89 is a generally more powerful and easy-to-use programmable calculator than the Nspire CAS.

The built-in software of the TI-89 is very mature, and has much more programming capability than the Nspire CAS. This enables it to run thousands of free user-supplied programs, which can be readily downloaded into the '89 from the internet (via a PC) using only software freely available from TI. The Nspire CAS, by contrast, has no "free" connectivity to the PC or internet. Even if it had this, it cannot run programs written for the '89 due to the lack of many programming features, like input/output and menus.

Possibly TI will remedy the deficiencies in the Nspire CAS programming capability in time, but one should not purchase a product that might be upgraded at some indefinite time when a product that already has the needed features is available right now.

I believe that TI is aware of the foregoing and other deficiencies in the Nspire CAS (many mentioned by other reviewers here). That's why they've priced the Nspire CAS about the same as the TI-89 Titanium, despite the Nspire's superior processor (potentially 3x faster execution), massively larger (20x) user memory capability, and somewhat better display.

TI...Did you forget to include something with my Nspire CAS?3
I'm basically saisfied with the product, but can't begin to discribe how poorly written and incomplete the documentation that accompanied it is. Case in point, my TI 83 plus came with a approximately 500 page manual. In contrast, the much more complex Nspire arrived with a 134 page guide. Can't wait for other publications on this calculator to hit bookstore shelves!

In the end, it's the software that does the work, whether on a calculator or a full-fledged computer. The TI-89 has proven to be an enduring example of superb hardware/software integration and value engineering, whereas the Nspire CAS, mostly due to immature software, is a beta product masquerading as a production release.

I am hopeful that the TI Nspire CAS will eventually supercede the TI-89. Given software capability that is merely the equal to that available with the TI-89, the Nspire CAS would today be the superior value proposition. Alas, that's not yet the case.

By Dan Yates, David S. Moore, Daren S. Starnes

Customer Reviews

Decent Book4
I think this book does a alright job for preparing someone for the AP exam. However the setup is a little different and annoying from the previous edition at certain spots. This one is up to date and the questions deal with more recent issues. Size wise its the same as the previous, so at least you don't have to drag a fat book around. Overall not the worst textbook I've ever had.

ehhh2
This book is alright. We just started using it in our statistics class. It is a very boring book and is not very well organized. I hate how the problems are not all in one section.

Practice of Statistics4
It is a textbook for a math class. How good could it possibly be?

Product Description

The Practice of Statistics is the only high school statistics textbook that directly reflects the College Board course description for AP Statistics. Combining the data analysis approach with the power of technology, innovative pedagogy, and a number of new features, the Third Edition is the most effective yet.

He was the closing speaker at the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics Conference in Chicago at which there were over 20,000 in attendance. In 1989, Dr. Kelly founded Brendan Kelly Publishing Inc. that now offers more than 20 titles including secondary school mathematics books that help teachers use Texas Instrument Graphing Calculators to teach mathematics. These books are sold widely throughout the United States and Canada and have been translated into Japanese for sale in their schools.

Product Description

Algebra is much easier to teach when your students can work through the self-directed lessons in this book. Students can explore mathematical concepts on the TI-84 Plus while you walk around the room and facilitate their learning. Keying sequences guide them through the labyrinth of menus on the TI-84 Plus without the need to page through the calculator manual. Detailed solutions at the back of the book help students over obstacles to their learning and the calculator functions are absorbed with minimal effort as the mathematics is learned. Some programs are included to showcase the power of iteration in solving some otherwise intractable problems. Historical vignettes are included to add a human dimension to the mathematical excursions. The topics include sequences & series, finding roots of polynomial equations, the fundamental theorem of algebra, complex numbers, fractals and mathematics of chaos, combinatorics, probability, linear systems, matrices, linear programming and various applications such as the mathematics of investment. A new section on Phi and the Golden Ratio has been added for current interest stimulated by The DaVinci Code. For those with the TI-84 Plus Silver Edition, this book includes references to the probability simulations involving coin and dice tossing experiments found on the Applications menu.

Editorial Reviews

Review
Review of the earlier publication titled Advanced Algebra with the TI-83 This book is a collection of seventeen explorations in precalculus mathematics. Each exploration includes a brief exposition, some worked examples, and about ten student exercises. The explorations fall into five different units: sequences and series; number theory, including some theory of equations; complex numbers; combinatorics and probability; and matrices, linear systems, and linear programming. Since this book covers only part of a typical advanced algebra or precalculus syllabus, it is perhaps most useful as a teacher resource or a source of enrichment for students capable of independent work in mathematics. As such, the book has much to recommend it. Some of the more interesting problems involve using Stirling's formula for approximation of factorials, Verhulst's logistic equation, and Mendel's experiments. The author has included some short programs, with no more than about fifteen lines, that teachers and students might find useful. Such programs, for example, will enable the user to solve a linear Diophantine equation, find the sum of a sequence too long for the TI-83 memory, or spend several hours drawing the Julia set on the calculator screen. --Albert Goetz, Ramaz School, New York, NY 10021.The Mathematics Teacher, Vol 92, #3, March 1999

Statistics with the TI-84 Plus Calculator

By Brendan Kelly

Product Description

The information age has made statistics one of the most important branches of mathematics. It should be explored using real data from interesting and current sources. Using this book, students enter real data onto spreadsheets or into statistical plots on the TI-84 Plus while you guide their learning and help them draw appropriate inferences. Keying sequences guide them through the labyrinth of statistics menus on the TI-84 Plus without the need to page through the calculator manual. Detailed solutions at the back of the book help students over obstacles to their learning and the application of various statistical techniques accessible on the TI-84 Plus menus and submenus are absorbed with minimal effort as the concepts of statistics are explored. Programs are included to perform experiments such as those applied in Monte Carlo investigations. Historical vignettes are included to add a human dimension to the mathematical excursions. The topics included are statistical inference, data graphs, central tendency, measures of dispersion, correlation, regression lines, statistical distributions such as the normal distribution, the Central Limit Theorem, sampling, Monte Carlo methods, confidence intervals and hypothesis testing. The probability density functions for the binomial, normal, t, Chi Square and F distributions are defined and their properties are explored in terms of their application to tests of hypotheses. New explorations in sampling techniques and inference have been added to the previous edition for the TI-83 Plus. For those with the TI-84 Plus Silver Edition, this book includes references to the statistical simulations involving coin and dice tossing experiments found on the Applications menu.

Review
Review of earlier editions for the TI-83 calculators These books allow teachers and students to easily integrate the graphing calculator into teaching and learning mathematics. Each exploration in the book begins with a little piece of mathematical history then, through step-by-step explanation and lists of calculator key sequences, presents such varied topics as finding the roots of an equation, working with parametric equations, and using high-end statistical analysis, such as chi-square frequency function and F distribution. Following the explanation for each exploration are practice exercises for students. A fully worked-out solution to each exercise is included in the answer-key section at the end of each publication. The exercises require higher mental activity than do many high school mathematics textbooks. The easy-to-follow format will quickly cure graphing-calculator phobia. These resources are especially useful for teachers who have never used graphing calculators. They quickly teach the most common functions of the calculator and are correlated to the most common areas of the high school curriculum. These publications are a must for any high school mathematics department that uses TI-83 calculators. The mathematical cartoons are a nice touch throughout both publications. --Terry Kaminski, Grand Centre High School, Cold Lake, AB T9M lV7.

Product Description

The properties of functions should be explored and discovered rather than taught and drilled. Students can explore various types of functions on the TI-84 Plus in cooperative groups or on their own as you facilitate their learning. Keying sequences guide them through the variety of menus on the TI-84 Plus without the need to page through the calculator manual. Detailed solutions at the back of the book help students over obstacles to their learning and the operation of the menus and submenus are absorbed with minimal effort as the mathematics is learned. Deeper investigations are included to challenge the more capable student, and historical vignettes are introduced to add a human dimension to the mathematical excursions. This new publication has been expanded to include a more detailed treatment of linear and quadratic functions and the law of sines and cosines found in most state and provincial guidelines. The topics include finding zeros, domain and range, extrema, and singularities of polynomial and rational functions. Properties of the trigonometric, exponential and logarithmic functions are also explored. Topics also include the study of limits and asymptotic behavior, polar coordinates, parametric equations and conics.

This Book is Downright Terrible1
I have literally not gotten one single answer out of this book. It is a dark unholy thing...just lurching into the night. Even the index is terrible in that it is extremely limited. There is not even an entry on how to use logorithmic functions. I have literally had way better luck pressing buttons in all kinds of combinations to slowly figure out how to use my best graphing calculator. Even the manual that came with the unit is way better than this book.

If you buy this rotten book, then plan to take up smoking. You will need to because it is extraordinarily stressful to try and find a single answer to anything out of this rotten text.

TI-84 Plus Graphing Calculator for Dummies4
Concise "How-to" serves as a quick and easy reference guide on getting the most out of your TI-84 Plus. With this in mind, it is now a reality that students can use the multi-functionality of this type of calculator in a manner that might be completely different than most numerical based subject teachers are aware. I think that its proper use is exceptionally good at efficiently providing "brute force" solutions to numerically based problems.

I felt that I had to add the above, more philosophical view of education before I began with the text review.

"This Calculator Changes Everything!"4
I have taught Physics for a number of years, and with all of the advances in computer and calculator based labs, I have begrudgingly wadded into the pool of new technology in the science classroom. I have had considerable problems with students using "canned programs" and fancy probes and sensors. I have always felt that we are simply training monkeys, and not educating.

However, what I have failed to understand, is that the "calculator standard", for which it seems that most secondary and post-secondary institutions are at the cutting edge, will likely be the TI 83/84. Even newer models still follow the basic calculator organization, and only improve upon, or add features. In many ways, this entire organization of the calculator could be as everyday later as the Square Root key on my old calculator.

TI-845
We purchased this calculator for my son's pre-calculus class. He has used a tutoral to become familiar with the product and found it very easy to use. If I had to purchase it again, I would have gone with the silver edition to obtain more memory.
I found the best price through Amazon and delivery came before we had expected.

Texas Instruments TI-84 Plus Graphing Calculator 5
I ordered this for my son,for all his studies he does at his high school,he loves it thanks for a great item and price.

Bad.1
I received the TI-84 and replaced the batteries several times and it did not turn on either time, the description said "like new" and when I emailed them for a refund they ignored it and said that I was putting the batteries in wrong or i need to press the buttons harder, and they would replace it, even though I wished to be refunded so I could buy one that is actually "like new". Pay an extra 5 bucks and buy from someone else.
